are raised now for the paul ryan versus joe biden debate. the obama campaign i don't think can afford the perception that they lost two in a row. i would think vice president joe biden's fingernails are beginning to sweat about next wednesday because he's somewhat in the same position as president obama. he's been vice president in for four years. had a lot of things going. been a long time since he's debated. paul ryan has been in the cut and thrust of congress, to be better prepared. however, ryan is in the shoes president obama was in last night and the expectations are high for ryan. i think most people feel that paul ryan will walk joe biden's dog in this debate, and that's a down for him. i would venture that the vice presidential debate may get the largest audience of any vice presidential de debate we've had so far. >> in 2008 with the introduction of sarah palin was the first time the vice presidential debate was ever the highest 01:39:43:rate ed debate. we have this again. >> governor romney, last night, people say he mangled the truth to put it gently. the obama campaign --

that there are skewed polls. paul ryan was the latest one to join on the bandwagon last night talking about wisconsin. >> i don't believe that particular poll. i won't get into the methodologies about it. >> they weren't talking about a specific poll in na statement, which sounds like it doesn't matter to him which poll it is but it's tainted. what's your take on this? we've heard it a lot over the last 48 hours. >> look at all the polls. if you go to realclearpolitics.com, for instance, in every poll in every swing state the president is a hit, it's hard to find a poll in a swing state where romney is leading. if you look at the data right now, we're looking at an election that looks more like 2008 than 2004. the president is ahead in almost every swing state, whether you look at gallup pews or pugh poll or nbc news polls, the president is far ahead right now. romney does five points nationally in some big swing state that romney does need a big move in the debates to change the game. anytime a campaign says a poll is wrong, it's a sign they're not doing well from my experience doing politics. >> su

their internal staff is going to be. first of all they're going to give biden a bayonet next week to carve ryan up. i don't think biden is good at it. we could have an over reaction biden show. second, there's one point and i agree totally with what john said, you saw what the country did, the guy who won massachusetts tonight. they've been afraid in the recall -- romney campaign to do that because they're over sensitive of criticism from the base. i think the base is going to be silent tomorrow because they tasted losing for a week. tonight they're tasting winning and i think you're going to see republican party get very much on board a winner now. if that continues, romney will be romney, the one we saw tonight which i think is actually the most authentic romney. the obama anyway litigate flip flopping. we'll see what the next week will look at. >> rose: i want to come back to that but john dickerson tell me about the medicare argument and obama says he prefers now and like the sound of obamacare. who won that particular argument about obamacare and what it does and whatever romney's propos

frank. paul ryan was very frank over the weekend in saying the ticket has had a tough couple weeks. when you have a tough couple weeks you're enthusiasm level can decline. a good performance in a presidential debate can gin party enthusiasm. that may happen on wednesday for either side. we'll have to see what transpires in the debate. jenna: we always have to wait to actually talk about it until thursday morning. >> that's right. jenna: let me go back to that appearance point that you made. just by having mitt romney on stage with the president, many say that is what is going to make him look more presidential as you mentioned maybe create more support or inspire certain folks out there. in trouble in ohio he's really in trouble in florida. he cannot lose both those states. and paul ryan brought nothing to the ticket except fear. we have a situation where white seniors are afraid of medicare, their message that we're going to protect it did not get through, seniors saw through that. and so i don't -- we can obsess about the smaller states and it's really tight in nevada but in the end ohio and florida if he can't win those he can't win. >> let's talk about fear for a second because -- i'll bring you back in, jeff. there was a great screen shot still from the newest romney ad that says literally emblazoned across a person's face your job is in danger. but the question jeff, does that message compute to people that things are bad and thus you're going to vote for the other guy at this point? >> it's really a question of which message is really resonating and in ohio and a lot of these states. in ohio particularly the obama team has pushed the auto rescue, there are a lot of jobs in ohio that were saved by that, and they see that as one of the reasons he's doing so well. the rom

a big deal out of it. web video this morning, you played paul ryan's comments. you know, i don't -- if president obama and his campaign team had a choice, i think they would rather joe biden not have used that phrase in relation to the last four years. that said, i think the life cycle of a gaffe now, andrea is so small it kind of rises up and becomes a huge thing for 15 minutes or one day, and then it disappears. my guess is, at 9:01 p.m. tonight when the debate starts, this will not be as big a deal and there will be new things to talk about, new issues to digest, again, not a great moment for joe biden and clearly one the white house would have rather he not have said. i just don't know that, you know, in two weeks time we're talking about it. >> all right. we'll see what -- whether there's a new gaffe or two or three to replace that one tonight. thank you very much. see you later. joining me in denver, stephanie cutter, deputy campaign manager for the president's re-election effort. where were you when you heard joe biden yesterday? >> i don't remember. because we don't see
